Central Park

In order to create a world-class playground that meets the recreation needs of the local inner city community, a comprehensive consultation program was undertaken to identify community needs and local concerns with 35 community stakeholder groups. The park features an upgraded wading pool and dynamic new spray park to cool off during the hot city summer, a new modern pavilion, a central and open area of artificial turf to facilitate informal soccer games, an interactive sand and water play area (the first in Manitoba) and a four-season slide/toboggan facility.

Providing a new playground for inner city children, this bold venture by both the public and private sectors has established a new level of excellence for recreational space design, both locally and internationally, and it was lauded in the media for excellence in public engagement:

"It's nice to see a plan that conforms with the people's wishes," said Rev. Bill Millar of nearby Knox United Church. “The planners (from landscape architecture firm Scatliff + Miller + Murray) engaged the community, and they listened to what they had to say and were able to incorporate their not-so-simple needs in a vibrant development."
