SMM is a planning and landscape architecture firm founded in 1989, with success in developing bold concepts and innovative design solutions. With offices in Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Toronto, Dauphin and Thunder Bay, we work with a variety of clients to improve the livability and performance of communities across Canada and abroad.
We are a multi-disciplinary team of urban designers, landscape architects, planners, public engagement specialists, active transportation technicians, graphic communicators, native plant specialists, biologists, and construction managers. This in-house diversity has proven to be an asset, as rather than delivering results from a single perspective, we take every opportunity to incorporate knowledge from a full range of disciplines.
Our embrace of context, local culture and regional character comes first in every project to cultivate well-defined designs that knit communities, places, and spaces together.
Approach
SMM's early work stemmed from pushing boundaries driven by ecology and sustainability. Our pursuit to build resilient communities and landscapes as infrastructure, at the time was an unconventional approach. This formed a strong sense of stewardship that is in our DNA and our commitment to guide community building. It also established the basis for our collaborative work on what we call our “Legacy Projects” today.
We continue to build on our experiences of leading by example, influencing policy through vision-based planning and challenging preconceived notions through transformative design.
