C-Square

Celebration Square
Service:
Urban Design + Placemaking
Location:
Calgary

A contemporary urban plaza in the heart of Calgary’s East Village. A community and LRT-hub in one.

C-Square is an integral part of the East village Master plan envisioned to be an urban gathering place for the community and one of the key outdoor rooms in a series of public realm experiences that define the East Village. C-square was strategically designed to be successful in its current context and to ensure that as the buildings around it are developed the plaza will still be a vibrant and successful contributor to the public realm experience.

C-Square is an informal gathering space, a connector designed with an artful expression of form and materials. The project has surpassed its goals and become a destination for the residents of East Village and the Calgary community at large with its landmark folded wood sculptural benches and the interactive illuminated veil that reacts to the movement of the train and can be synchronized to stage performances.

What the Jury Said:

“An interstitial urban space within the city that goes beyond the ordinary placemaking vocabulary to embrace infrastructure. Aluminum blades shift colour as the train passes directly through the space, while, on the other side of the tracks, wooden benches extend to serve as planters. This is a fresh and original approach that explores new ways of celebrating public transit in the city.”
