Gordon Bell Recreational Field
SMM won the design competition for the highly publicized development of a new first-rate athletic and recreational site for Gordon Bell High School and the greater community.
The Winnipeg School Division trustees and the provincial Public Schools Finance Board approved the community’s enthusiastic choice of SMM’s design in January 2011. Completed in 2014, the site has become a well-used and valuable addition to the school. Our team committed to the project by providing a professional fund raising consulting team to the process in order to assist the true vision be realized.
Through engagement with students and the community, together SMM and KGS further developed the conceptual design which transformed this concrete urban island into a field of dreams – a green space with a state of the art athletic facility including a sunken practice field suitable for a range of sports including soccer and football. The design also incorporates complementary spaces for gathering, performance and outdoor education, and won the Winnipeg Access Advisory Committee’s 2014 Physical Access Award for New Construction. The project’s greatest challenge was to meet the sports-focused aspirations for this undersized and land locked site (defined by 2 significant roadways: Broadway and Portage Avenue). To meet this challenge, our team proposed an approach that brought reality to the stakeholders through engagement, and a critical analysis of needs and demands. This sunken artificial turf field accommodates all sporting activities as a practice field, in so doing – it also provides significant community benefit for longer hours throughout the year.
