Royalwood Wetlands
The Royalwood project in Winnipeg, Manitoba is an example of leading-edge sustainable community design.
The planning of the 485-acre site included the categorization and retention of existing tree stands and drainage patterns that naturally occur along the Seine River. 88 of 89 acres of old growth urban forest were retained.
SMM, with Native Plant Solutions, constructed a natural system of wetlands which is integrated into the development. The complex system contains and purifies stormwater for slow release into the city’s infrastructure system, and is a habitat for wildlife, waterfowl, and native plant species. The wetlands provide a community focal point, outdoor classroom, and unique place for recreation while bringing nature closer to home.
The Royalwood Subdivision has since become the paradigm for responsible housing development in Winnipeg by stimulating new interest in challenging traditional subdivision standards. The development marked the first installation of an urban naturalized wetland system in the City of Winnipeg.
