Tactical urbanism, transformation of existing infrastructure into a public realm amenity, integrated public art, simple robust materials, use of existing drainage infrastructure, turning the banal into the extraordinary, creating a destination for the community and all Calgarians, enabling fun and enjoyment on a budget.

Bounce is the transformation of an existing East Village parking lot into a thriving public amenity through the collaboration and creativity on a limited budget. Working with CMLC, SMM was able to achieve the project goals without altering the drainage infrastructure allowing to maximize the budget. A place for all ages Bounce is comprised of a full-size basketball court, ping pong table, colourful resilient surfacing and painted games. Inexpensive and informal sculptural seating adds to the whimsy and character of the place. Bounce was constructed in three weeks and has become an instant success and social media attraction leading to many including City Councillors to publicly ask “Why don't we do more of this?”
