Over the past decade, SMM has emerged as the leading expert in sustainable and active transportation (AT) in Manitoba, initiating new and innovative ideas for healthier, more sustainable communities. SMM leads the corporate pack on ‘Bike to Work Day’. Our AT specialists are authentic - they practice the AT lifestyle as part of their everyday lives.

SMM’s approach combines professional insight and exceptional depth of knowledge in AT facility and trail design with pragmatic “on the ground” know-how. Our specialists design strategies and implement trail and active transportation systems for all sizes of municipalities, cities and regions, park trail systems and arterial roadways. We understand the high-level issues related to moving people and goods around a community, and know it from a ground-level perspective as committed and enthusiastic users of active and sustainable modes of transportation. SMM delivered Winnipeg’s most significant AT initiative, managing several teams of consultants in the public engagement, design, tendering and construction of over $21 million of AT infrastructure throughout Winnipeg in a short ten month time line.

SMM’s combined advanced expertise ultimately results in well-considered AT systems, whether it’s building a case for AT investment, developing an AT plan that fits with a community’s broader sustainability goals or coordinating the design, public input and construction of AT facilities. Certified by Portland State University and the Initiative for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation in Comprehensive Bicycle Design and Planning, our accomplished team members offer clients expert knowledge that is unmatched in Manitoba.

We believe that active transportation facilities and trail systems improve a community’s quality of life and sense of place and contribute to healthier and more sustainable cities.
